To design and produce an informative booklet on a subject of my choosing, containing at least three distinct sections and three augmented reality features.

In January 2022, Unit Editions released Ed Fella: A Life in Images, a Kickstarter-funded volume designed by Fella himself that features essays examining the designer’s impact in the design world and a wide lineup of his work over the years. For this project, I decided to create a booklet designed to be released alongside such A Life in Images, doubling as a promotional piece as well as a standalone publication, honoring the near-decade since the designer’s retirement from CalArts faculty in 2013. It would be sold through Unit Editions and available in the CalArts bookstore and various CalArts campus events.

Divided into three sections, the booklet begins with a 2022 article on Fella written by Rick Poynor for AIGA Eye on Design, followed by an adaptation of Michael Dooley’s 1994 interview of the designer for Emigre Magazine. The booklet is closed out with an homage to the traditional “plates” section, which pairs a variety of Fella’s works with quotes about him by friends and colleagues, gathered by Michael Dooley for Print Magazine in 2013 upon the designer’s retirement from the faculty of CalArts. In contrast to the first two sections, which are printed in limited ink colors on gray and cream papers, respectively, the final section is printed in full color on glossy photo paper. Each section composes one of three signatures, which are Coptic bound and sewn to an outer cover. Body copy is set in Triplex, while display type is set in Apercu.

The three interactive features were created using the Artivive app, which allows the viewer to scan a piece of art or design and displays an accompanying video, often an animation of the still image. I chose three pages with content that could be enhanced by visual aids and created an accompanying animated element for each, marked by the Artivive logo (right). The first gives four examples of flyers that Ed Fella designed for lectures during his time at CalArts, which were mentioned in the page’s copy, while the second animation displays the designer’s alphabet design for the cover of the Thames and Hudson Dictionary of Graphic Design and Designers. The third interactive feature is opposite a page describing Barry Deck’s Template Gothic typeface that was based on a poster designed by Fella, so it displays the poster and a sample of the typeface.
